Is it a good idea to major in Game Designing or just major in art and computer science?

I want to be a video game designer, also I like to draw. I also heard that a degree in game designing isn't taken seriously. Is that really true? So should I just major in computer science and art or something that involves multimedia? What would be the recommended courses?
